Today’s Teenage Nutrition Getting something to eat from a convenience store or a fast food restaurant is an everyday thing for most teenagers. For breakfast it’s a sugar covered donut, for lunch: a bacon cheeseburger from a fast food restaurant near the school, and for dinner: mom’s homemade 4 cheese casserole! A typical day for an unhealthy teen! Today’s teens are not getting enough nutrients; most teens rather not eat then have fruit or vegetables. Which is a very bad idea because it will have an effect on you later down the road; making better choices and looking at how healthy food actually is, can stop: obesity, diabetes, cancer and heart problems. Adolescents need a more fit diet, it will help now and when our body most needs it in†¦show more content†¦An unhealthy diet can cause many problems such as obesity, heart complications, or even death. Having a nonnutritive intake can affect your future and may badly influence other generations or others around you. Research has s hown that fast food has too much of one mineral, sodium, which raises your blood pressure. High blood pressure can cause many difficulties such as heart attacks and strokes (Kolodziejski, Media). In conclusion, making the choice between eating healthy, or driving down the street to order a large greasy cheese pizza, is tough decision for a teenager. I think I’m both a healthy eater and a junk food craver. It’s not a good habit but it can be changed in a matter of time and should be thought about more than anything. It’s difficult to stop a junk food habit however if you are wanting to have a healthy, long lasting life, it needs to be broken for a good reason. I have also learned through researching about nutrition that it is so easy to have more problems in life just by eating an unhealthy meal. Moreover, it can be hard to change your eating habits in a society, like the one we live in today, but if you can change your habits it will make an influence on others around you. Ethical Analysis of the Case Theory of Utilitarianism Theory of Utilitarianism is an ethical theory that evaluates a particular act on the basis of benefits and good that it causes to a huge section of people. The greater the good that is caused, the higher is the ethical correctness that is involved. Samsung succeeded in providing some of the patented features of Apple, the sale of products of Apple went down that resulted in the deterioration of revenues for Apple. Also, there was a great unrest among the employees of Apple that further lowered down their productivity levels. The entities that benefitted from the case were the stakeholders at Samsung along with the users that gained an opportunity to have more choices in the market with difference in terms of price (West, 2004). The activity resulted in a great loss for majority of sections and was therefore not justified ethically as per the theory of Utilitarianism (Jacobson, 2008). Theory of Deontology Another extremely relevant theory of ethics is the theory of Deontology in which the ethical correctness is evaluated and justified on the basis of the rules around an activity. There are certain guidelines and rules that are associated with an act and if the act adheres to these rules then it is termed as an ethically correct act on the basis of this particular ethical theory and vice versa. In case of the violation of patents by Samsung, there is an involvement of Intellectual Property. There were many features that originally belonged and were patented by Apple such as slide feature, quick links, syncing with the background, universal search and many more. Video transmission, folder organization and camera organization were some of the patents that were filed by Samsung and it accused Apple of copying all these. As per the regulatory and legal rules, copying of a patented feature or information is a crime and also violation of the Intellectual Property. Apple and Samsung did not s tick to the rules that were defined and violated the patents. Therefore, the case is considered to be ethically inadequate and inaccurate (Friend, 2015). Virtue Ethics Happiness is the major aim in life and the theory of virtue ethics terms an activity as ethically correct if it causes happiness to the parties that are involved (Grcic, 2013). The resources at both the companies wanted their products to have a higher sale in the market and also wanted their respective customers to enjoy and experience newer set of features. There were selfish interests involved in case of Apple and in case of Samsung as well. The activity is therefore termed as ethically inadequate and inaccurate on the basis of the theory of Virtue Ethics (Hursthouse, 2012). The aim of Apple and Samsung along with their respective resources was the happiness of self and the happiness of customers at the sake of loss to the other party. Loss that was caused by the patent infringement to both the parties resulted in the creation of unhappiness and unrest instead of causing benefits to one and all. Theory of Social Contract There are numerous social guidelines and rules that have been defined and these guidelines vary from one community and one section of people to the other (Friend, 2017). It seems that there is an ever-increasing trend in our society. Big corporations are becoming more and more influential in our lives. As they gain more and more muscle in our government they also invade our schools and many other facets of our lives. Perhaps the most disturbing area of potential influence, however, is corporate control of the media. Can the American media uphold its values of free press under pressure from big corporations? Can they continue to present the absolute truth? The simple answer, especially in my opinion, is no. The movie The Insider provides us with an excellent case to back that point of view. Perhaps one of the biggest stories of this decade has been the tobacco industry. We saw them stand before Congress and tell the world that cigarettes were not addictive. The industry was able to lawyer its way out of trouble time and time again. They essentially used legal maneuvers, and certainly money, to keep the truth from the American people. Finally, we saw all that come to an end. When Jeff Wigand decided it was time to tell the truth, he put everything he valued at risk. He stood to loose his family, any chance at a job, and quite possibly his life. He knew all these things and still he went on, because he thought he could make a difference. He knew that his testimony would never be heard in a court of law, so where could he turn. The answer: the fourth and fifth estates, or the press and television. Every night millions of Americans sit down and watch the nightly news or read the paper. We know that we will be told all the days news, that we will be educated about what is happening in the world around us. We also know that we will be updated on issues that we care about as individuals and a society. Another delivery mechanism for information is television magazine shows like 60 Minutes. People know that when Mike Wallace talks to them, they should listen. They can also look at his reputation and know that he is telling the truth. Wigand put faith in that fact. Wigand agreed to do an interview with 60 Minutes because he knew that people would listen. He knew that the absolute truth would finally be out in the open, and that it would come from a source that people would believe. He risked everything because he had faith in the media and journalists. What happened next is, quite frankly, disgraceful. When the tobacco industry, specifically the company B&W learned that CBS intended to air the interview, they began to lean on the CBS corporate office. They threatened lawsuits that could quite possibly mean that B&W would end up owning CBS. There were other factors as well. Westinghouse was about to purchase CBS. That meant that corporate managers stood to make lots of money. A lawsuit with B&W could have easily made Westinghouse pull out of the deal, and people would loose money. Essentially the whole situation came down to an issue of money. CBS News decided not to air the story. It is quite obvious that they did not make that decision based upon any journalistic issues. They were being leaned on by the corporate office, which was looking at dollar signs. CBS News was setting aside the truth for money, something it never should have even considered doing. Than goodness that Lowell Bergman was there to stop the lunacy. He correctly pointed out that the CBS corporate office had no right to tell CBS News what stories it could and could not air. The truth is the truth, no matter who it damages. Bergman embarked on a crusade to see that the whole story was aired. Eventually CBS did air the entire interview. The only did so after receiving sharp criticism in The New York Times. The Washington Post, also showed that the smear campaign that CBS was using as justification for not airing the story, was nothing more than trumped up charges. CBS was left looking quite nasty, and decided to show the interview. The whole point is that business has no right to decide what is news. They have no right to come and stop a
